“Kairos Ensemble is a very special group to be a part of and to write for,” says Peter, “not least because of our secret weapon: the tuba! It opens up a whole load of musical possibilities because, as well as providing the bass function, it sustains melodic lines beautifully and has a phenomenal range. This, coupled with amplification and effects can conjure up unique soundscapes. The tone colours of tuba and saxophone also really compliment each other and that’s something I’ve tried to bear in mind with the latest composition based on Song of Songs. Kairos, although a quartet at heart - which you can hear on Rejoicing Blues, often extends it’s lineup to feature quest musicians, as with the Passion Suite which includes string quartet, choir, featured vocalists, guitar and trumpet.”

The members of Kairos Ensemble met in the early 90's whilst studying music at the Royal Academy of Music and City University in London, forming the quartet in 2001. Their live work includes jazz concerts, workshops, functions and tours. Their critically acclaimed recordings include Rejoicing Blues (2013), Passion Suite (2010), Psalms (2006) and The River (2002).

Saxophonist Dan Foster grew up in Newcastle and studied jazz at the Royal Academy of Music. He has played, amongst others, for Alex Wilson, Pasadena Roof Orchestra and the London Jazz Orchestra.

After studying at City University, tuba player Richard Fox has performed and recorded with a wide variety of ensembles, including English National Opera, Snarky Puppy, and the Brasshoppers. 

Versatile drummer Tom Hooper began to play professionally at 14 years of age in Cornwall. He moved to London to study Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music. His freelance work as a musician has included The Chris Garrick Quartet, Kinobe and Grace Jones.
